Complete our five-minute survey about your favourite urban walks in Lancaster for the chance to win one of ten £10 Amazon vouchers.

Overview:

The emergence of on-line mapping services has produced a dominant map aesthetic that serves the very general utility requirements of turn-by-turn urban navigation. ‘Paths of Desire’ investigates the opportunities for the creation of aesthetically pleasing bespoke digital maps for personal mobile applications. The project builds upon the notion of ‘paths of desire’ or the practice of pedestrians usually taking the shortest or most easily navigated route between an origin and destination. Whilst this practice may be efficient, it means that many special locations within cities may lie undiscovered.

This research is part of The Creative Exchange hub (CX), which focuses on bringing together pioneering companies and the best academic thinkers to explore the potential of “The Digital Public Space” where anyone, anywhere, anytime can access, explore and create with digital content.

Description of the project:

The project will consider the creation of personalised dynamic digital maps that offer users the opportunity to deviate from their normal routes by changing the aesthetics of the map in real time, as the user navigates around the city.

What is expected of you:

You are asked to complete an online survey that highlights your preferred areas of Lancaster. At the end of the survey, you will be asked to enter your email address if you want to participate in the raffle of 10 Amazon vouchers of £10 each. Also, by providing us with your email address, you will have the option of being informed when the second part of the study will take place.

Will my data be Identifiable?

The information you provide is confidential. The data collected for this study will be stored securely and only the researchers conducting this study will have access to this data:

  • The files on the computer will be encrypted (no-one other than the researchers will be able to access them) and the computer itself password protected.
